Akaroa Harbour
Just 75 kilometres from the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, Akaroa is an historic French and British village nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano.
The 'plug' of the volcano is Onawe Peninsula, which is so narrow where it projects from the head of the harbour, that it becomes an island itself at low tide. Right there at that narrow ridge, the rocky cliffs show many signs of the tempestuous boiling lava that spewed from the volcano last time it was active, about 6 million years ago.
In 1832 the small peninsula was the site of a fierce inter-tribal battle when warring North Island Maori, Chief Te Rauparaha destroyed many of the more peaceful South Island Maori villages, including this one on Onawe Peninsula.
I love painting this scene with its turquoise water and volcanic hillsides - if you would like your own version of Akaroa Harbour, commission your very own original!
Award Winning Artist, Christchurch, New Zealand, Testimonials
Due to my wide wall, I was trying to get a very large print of "Kaleidoscope". I worked that out over email with Lorraine -- She was very responsive and the resulting print order was processed quickly and looks great! She had patiently answered many questions of mine -- given neutral/ non-pushy information on the various print options and framing possibilities.
