Castle Hill Formations 3

The Castle Hill area is of special cultural, spiritual and historical significance to Aotearoa/New Zealand's South Island Maori, the Ngai Tahu people who named it Kura Tawhiti (meaning 'treasure from afar').

Hidden amongst the limestone outcrops of Castle Hill are traces of 500-year old charcoal drawings traditionally said to have been left by the Waitaha, the first people to travel through this area.

This is one of a series of paintings I created, following some recent excursions to the area.
