Castle Hill Formations 4

The limestone outcrops on the ridges and slopes of this valley originate in the South Pacific sea-beds. Under pressure from shifting tectonic plates, they rose to become some of the steep mountains and valleys of New Zealand's South Island.

They provide fascinating landscapes which have been used as settings for many films including 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, and 'Narnia - The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe'.

One of my series of paintings of the fascinating Castle Hill rocks, following recent excursions to their location which is less than an hour west of our home out on the Canterbury Plains.
