Village Rooster

Medium:
Acrylic on board

In a tiny three-hut village in rural Zimbabwe this gorgeous fellow seemed to spend his life rushing past in pursuit of two diminutive hens! (I have painted this beautifully flamboyant rooster several times!)

The village itself is managed by a woman who cares for her 5 children, two other orphaned children and an aunt. The men have been forced to leave to find work elsewhere, to try to combat the ubiquitous poverty of this formerly exemplary African country.

Godwits Return

Medium:
Watercolour on paper

The Bar-tailed Godwits' annual arrival heralds spring in Christchurch, New Zealand!

Every year the Christ Church Cathedral bells peal for 30 minutes to announce the arrival of over 2000 of these welcome visitors in September, after the birds have endured a non-stop migration flight from Alaska to New Zealand, covering at least 11,680 km in just eight or nine days! An amazing feat and worthy of the celebration! They depart for the northern hemisphere spring and summer at the beginning of March.

As if in flight, these gracious animals soar through the warm waters of Hawaii in perfect harmony. Painted for friends in Nashville.

Wolves in Moonlight

Medium:
Watercolour on paper

Artist Lorraine Jacobs felt very privileged to have the opportunity to visit Wolf Haven, a visitor-friendly sanctuary in Washington State, USA.

I have painted similar scenes to this several times. This one shows three timber wolves on the edge of the woods, cautiously checking out the snow-swept landscape at daybreak. My wolf paintings have, on more than one occasion, raised the hackles on the necks of household dogs, when they've suddenly sensed a threat from these realistic creatures!
