The Bar-tailed Godwits' annual arrival heralds spring in Christchurch, New Zealand!
Every year the Christ Church Cathedral bells peal for 30 minutes to announce the arrival of over 2000 of these welcome visitors in September, after the birds have endured a non-stop migration flight from Alaska to New Zealand, covering at least 11,680 km in just eight or nine days! An amazing feat and worthy of the celebration! They depart for the northern hemisphere spring and summer at the beginning of March.
The painting was commissioned by a person who joins the crowds watching the plucky birds' arrival at the double estuary of the Avon and Heathcote Rivers.
