Taupo Foreshore

Lake Taupo is situated in the North Island of New Zealand. With a shoreline of nearly 200km, and a surface are of 616 square kilometres.

The lake lies in a caldera created following a huge volcanic eruption approximately 26,500 years ago. According to geological records, the volcano has erupted 28 times in the last 27,000 years.

To this day a dormant volcano, an eruption in 180 CE was one of the largest in recorded history anywhere in the world. The skies and sunsets formed from this eruption were noted by Roman and Chinese observers.

Today Lake Taupo is world-renowned for its trolling and fly-fishing, sailing and holiday homes. Nearby three snow-clad volcanoes rise above the native forests.
